In short

Intranasal FGF-1 research in Parkinson's continued into the new year. This month's update focused mainly on topics outside Parkinson's research.

Most of January's update covered other topics, including the chief executive's views on medical research in general. The parts about Parkinson's and the science behind FGF-1 are set out here.

Parkinson's research

The update said the team continued to see improvements among the participants with Parkinson's. It also said that higher doses of FGF-1, given with a new delivery device, appeared to be producing better results than earlier dosing.

By January, the update said, more than 250 people were taking part in the Parkinson's research study. The team wrote that when it finds a better level of dosing, it wants every participant to receive it. It expected to spend the next few months moving all of them up to the higher dosing levels.

Counts from the research team

The research team reported that Zhittya had now dosed more than 250 people with Parkinson's, along with five people who had a stroke, two with dementia and two with autism. FGF-1 is given as a spray into the nose.

The update shared a short comment from the caregiver of a participant with Parkinson's. It was about his thinking and about the newer nebulizer-style dosing. A nebulizer is a device that turns a liquid into a fine mist.

Brain imaging and other notes

The update noted that a brain imaging study at Washington University in St. Louis was continuing. It uses functional MRI, a type of scan, to look at blood flow in the brain before and after FGF-1 dosing.

The chief executive closed by answering readers who had asked about other conditions. He wrote that Zhittya was working on more than 20 research areas and had not dropped any of them. With limited resources, he said, the team gives priority to areas where results can be seen in the shortest time.
